The Exo Terra Glass Terrarium features front opening doors, allowing easy access for maintenance and feeding and a unique double ventilation system with full screen top. All components of the Crested Gecko Habitat Kit are based on the knowledge gathered during the Crested Gecko Expedition in combination with information on captive husbandry from well-known Crested Gecko breeders. The background included in the kit is a copy of a tree trunk overgrown with lianas and littered with lichens and mosses that we found in the habitat of the Crested Gecko. The unique Totem ornament reflects the spirit of the indigenous Kanak people’s culture, their sacred totem statues are found all over the Islands. The Kanak Totem Ornament also serves as hiding cave, water bowl and food cup holder for the Exo Terra Crested Gecko Diet.

Crested Gecko Expedition:
In January 2013 the Exo Terra Expedition team headed to New Caledonia, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. This archipelago is the home of the well known Crested Gecko, one of the most kept gecko species in captivity today. The focus of the expedition was the natural history of the Crested Gecko and to collect relevant data to give a better insight on how to successfully keep and breed these unique geckos. The Expedition team scouted the rainforest by daytime to locate the habitats of the Crested Gecko, and returned at night to study their behavior in their natural environment. Wherever Crested Geckos were located temperature and humidity loggers were placed, samples of soil/ substrate was taken and we searched for ripe fruits and flowers that might be part of the Crested Gecko’s diet.

History
The Crested Gecko was first described in 1866 as Correlophus ciliatus by Guichenot, but in 1883 Boulenger classified it in the genus Rhacodactylus. Up to 1993 Correlophus ciliatus was known from only 16 specimens collected from a single locality on Grand Terre (the largest Island of the archipelago), so it was presumed crested geckos were extinct as they had not been seen or collected for over a century (Bauer & Sadlier 1993). Then in 1994, following a tropical cyclone, there was a report of a Correlophus ciliatus being sighted on the Isle of Pines (a satellite island south of the larger Island Grand Terre). As a result of this report, the renowned German herpetologist Wilhelm Henkel and his colleagues visited the Isle of Pines and rediscovered Correlophus ciliatus. Several specimen where brought back to Europe to study their behavior in captivity. Just a few months later, American herpetologists Philippe de Vosjoli and Frank Fast also explored the Isle of Pines and in turn took specimens back to America to begin a captive breeding program.

From only a few specimen, Correlophus ciliatus became very well established in captivity over the past few years, and is now one of the most kept gecko species in terrarium today!

The decorative plant(s), that attach(es) to the Totem ornament, is/are Bird’s Nest Fern, a fern that is so abundant that it partially covers the forest floor in the Crested Gecko’s natural habitat. The Plantation Soil substrate contributes to the relatively high humidity levels needed for the Crested Gecko’s health, as it retains moisture and slowly releases it. The analog Thermometer and Hygrometer allow close monitoring of the temperature and humidity levels.

The easy-to-install Day & Night LED lighting system has bright white LED’s that create a nice daylight and (a) blue LED to mimic a moonlight shimmer that enables you to observe your animals at night without disturbing their natural behavior. The dim light of the blue LED’s allows nocturnal animals to navigate in their territory in search of insects, mating-partners, etc… . The low energy consumption of the LED fixture and almost complete absence of heat production reduces the risk of overheating and allows natural night time temperature drops.

An instruction manual and care guide written by Philippe de Vosjoli can be downloaded for free to guide you through the process of installation, decoration and maintenance of your Crested Gecko Terrarium.
