Amidst the lush landscapes and dramatic coastal cliffs of Réunion Island, a small, vibrant gecko clings to survival in a world reshaped by human influence. The Manapany Day Gecko or Phelsuma inexpectata is endemic to Réunion and cloaked in mystery, its original natural distribution obscured by centuries of human activity and a presumed shrinkage from much of its original territory. Today, this elusive creature’s presence remains a patchwork of fragmented habitats, primarily clinging to the southern coastline within a mere 100 meters of the sea.

Current scientific monitoring reveals that only a few dozen Manapany Day Geckos remain on these cliffs, primarily hindered by high mortality rates among the young. Although new geckos are born, very few survive to adulthood. As a result, the aging adult population is not being replenished, signaling a distressing forecast for these geckos: without intervention, they could be extinct within three to four years.

In response to this urgent situation, the NOI has initiated a pioneering transitional raring program to bolster the dwindling populations. By nurturing young geckos to maturity in a controlled environment, the project hopes to reintroduce robust, mature geckos back into their natural habitat, buying time to investigate and address the underlying causes of their decline.

Exo Terra has contributed significantly by donating and shipping Screen Terrariums to the NOI on Réunion Island as part of this life-saving initiative. These Exo Terra Screen Terrariums provide a safe space for these young geckos to grow. This emergency measure, coupled with ongoing habitat restoration and predator control efforts, forms a multifaceted strategy to avert the imminent risk of in-situ extinction. Together, these actions represent a beacon of hope for the Manapany green gecko, illustrating the power of collaboration and innovation in conservation.
