Jesse Smets
Jesse Smets is a dedicated enthusiast with a lifelong passion for exotic animals. His journey began during his childhood, growing up with poison dart frogs that sparked a fascination for the natural world.
At just seven years old, Jesse welcomed his first snake, a Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttata), into his life, marking the early stages of a remarkable journey into the realm of reptiles. By age 12, he embarked on a unique adventure, engaging in ball python breeding alongside his father, gaining invaluable knowledge in snake husbandry and genetics.
Jesse’s interest in exotic invertebrates expanded at age 18 when he delved into ant-keeping, observing, and caring for these intricate social insects. This endeavor gave him a deeper understanding of the complexities of ant colonies.
Continuing his exploration of the animal kingdom, Jesse became one of the pioneers in breeding Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky,” a rare and sought-after species of isopods. This accomplishment showcased his commitment to understanding and preserving cryptid species.
Jesse’s passion for exotic animals led him to work in a retail position at an amphibian and reptile store, where he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with fellow enthusiasts. This hands-on experience further enriched his understanding of these remarkable creatures.
His dedication to the field culminated in an internship at Exo Terra, where he gained invaluable insights into the professional side of herpetology. This experience served as a stepping stone to his academic pursuits, culminating in his successful graduation with a professional bachelor’s degree in Crossmedia Design.
Jesse’s journey came full circle after graduation as he joined the team at Exo Terra, putting his expertise to use in the industry he loves. He remains deeply committed to his lifelong passion for exotic animals, focusing on ant-keeping, and breeding Glass Frogs (Centrolenids) and various Tree Frogs. Additionally, he dedicates his expertise to caring for and breeding Mniarogekko chahoua and Rhacodactylus leachianus, two rare New Caledonian gecko species.
His journey is a testament to his enduring dedication to the world of exotic creatures. His mission encompasses nurturing and breeding these unique animals, actively contributing to their conservation efforts, and expanding the general knowledge surrounding these extraordinary beings. Jesse’s ongoing efforts continue to leave a meaningful imprint on the fields of herpetology and entomology.
